The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CA&ES) administrative structure promotes interdepartmental collaboration among groups of faculty with related interests. This framework also provides for faculty to work with colleagues throughout CA&ES, the College of Biological Sciences, College of Engineering, and across the campus.
Agricultural and Resource Economics
Faculty and students in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics study the production, distribution and consumption of food, fiber and energy in both well-developed countries and emerging economies. The depth, breadth and rigor of the department’s teaching, research and outreach enable them to make major contributions to society in the areas of agriculture, environment and natural resources, and international development.
Animal Science
The Department of Animal Science’s mission is to create and disseminate knowledge about animals for the betterment of animals, society and the environment in California and beyond. Researchers integrate diverse aspects of the animal and environment, ranging from reduced detrimental emissions and effluent while preserving animal welfare and enhancing productivity and emphasizing healthful and safe aspects of products, wildlife habitat preservation and economic stability.
Biological and Agricultural Engineering
The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering programs are structured along three primary lines of excellence in biotechnical engineering, agricultural and natural resources engineering, and food engineering.
Entomology and Nematology
The Department of Entomology and Nematology is focused on addressing the broader scientific and societal importance of arthropods and nematodes. Departmental research is grouped into five broad areas: biodiversity, ecology, functional biology, sustainable agriculture and vector biology.
Environmental Science and Policy
The Department of Environmental Science and Policy plays a unique role in bringing together the natural sciences and social sciences to improve environmental policies, protect biodiversity, understand ecological processes and foster an interdisciplinary perspective on environmental and natural resource issues.
Environmental Toxicology
The Department of Toxicology focuses on the study of how chemicals move within the environment and affect biological systems. Research combines environmental chemistry and exposure routes of toxins with the organismal, cellular, and molecular mechanisms of intoxication.
Food Science and Technology
The Department of Food Science and Technology is internationally recognized for its advances in making food and beverages more healthful, appealing and safe. It is the only such department within the University of California and is the state’s principle academic food science research group.
Human Ecology
The Department of Human Ecology integrates themes of people, place and power. The three areas within the department include Human Development and Family Studies; Landscape Architecture and Environmental Design; and Community and Regional Development.
Land, Air and Water Resources
The Department of Land, Air and Water Resources is multidisciplinary with faculty who specialize in atmospheric science, plant sciences, soils and biogeochemistry, hydrology and water engineering. Teaching, research and outreach efforts focus on agricultural and environmental aspects of these disciplines.
Nutrition
The Department of Nutrition encompasses all aspects of the consumption and utilization of food and its constituents. Research in the department ranges from basic biology to intervention studies, focusing on better treatment and prevention of health problems.
Plant Pathology
The Department of Plant Pathology is focused on expanding basic knowledge regarding the biology and ecology of plant-infecting microbes, the etiology and epidemiology of plant diseases, and interactions between hosts and pathogens.
Plant Sciences
The Department of Plant Sciences is a leader in the research, teaching and delivery of all aspects of plant science, from lab to field, forest, rangeland and beyond. The department address the world’s agricultural, ecological and environmental needs through cutting-edge science, dynamic education and exemplary outreach.
Viticulture and Enology
The Department of Viticulture and Enology unites a diverse community of faculty, staff and students under a shared passion for wine. The curriculum encompasses a strong scientific foundation with immersive hands-on experience in the winery and vineyard and is expanding to included business education to graduate leaders whose careers will define California’s wine industry and beyond.
Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology
The Department of Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology is dedicated to the research and training in the fields of biology, ecology and conservation of all wildlife and fish species, and to resolution of human-wildlife conflicts. The program promotes research and understanding of the biology wild vertebrates, including native, non-native and pest species with the goal of improving management of these species for the people of California and elsewhere.
